ABOUT WILLY OSMAN

ARTIST STATEMENT

I grew up in Newton, Massachusetts in a family of artists and musicians. I have spent most of my life convinced that I could not paint. Then one day, when I was 62 years old, I picked up a paintbrush, tried it out, and have been painting ever since.

Using acrylics, I paint primarily landscapes but also enjoy the occasional still life or abstract. I often paint to the accompaniment of music. I feel as if my hands and paintbrush are "dancing" to the music. I loosen up and relax, as my inhibitions and worries fade away.  Then I fall into a "flow", wherein I lose much of my sense of time and space and become one with the activity. This phenomenon of flow is the closest thing to nirvana that I've ever experienced in my life.

At this point, I am still experimenting with various techniques and subject matter, and I am convinced that my unique style will appear over time; I am in no rush. I do, however, have a more immediate goal -- to stop dwelling so much on the opinions of friends and family who view my art. In the future, I will become more self-confident and allow myself to paint exactly what I am inspired to paint, rather than what I believe others want to see.
